Investing in our Students

Job shadowing is a one-time experience for students to shadow a job in an industry of interest. This may be for a full day or a few hours, depending on student and business availability.

A full internship is an opportunity for a student to be on-site at a business to gain meaningful experience in an industry of their interest. This opportunity is typically lasts 8 weeks, allowing the student up to 10 hours per week of on-site work. Internships are scheduled in coordination with the student’s academic schedule and coursework. During this time, students will apply academic, employability, and technical skills in the workplace. Businesses can help students earn industry recognized credentials.

Pre-Apprenticeship teaches basic technical and job-readiness skills for a designated apprentice occupation or sector toprepare students for a formal registered apprenticeship training program. The intent of a pre-apprenticeship program is to see the student through pre-apprenticeship to apprentice to being gainfully employed with the apprenticeship site. This opportunity is typically within the skilled-trade industries.

Mentorship is an opportunity for a student to observe and participate in field work for one or two full days. This time gives the student the opportunity to see work in the industry being completed and allows time to meet with professionals in the field to talk through potential career paths and higher education needs. The mentorship program also gives the student a contact person to connect with during high school and after graduation to continue to mentor-menteerelationship.

The Career Expo, typically held in March at the Canal Winchester High School, lets students explore many career paths and options. Students have the ability to practice networking and interviewing skills with local employers. Students are encouraged to bring copies of their resumes to give to potential employers.

Career interviews allow students to interview a professional in an industry of interest. This interview typically lasts one hour. The student will prepare questions to ask the professional in advance and have them approved by the WBL Coordinator. Business partners can also come in and present industry information to students.

Career readiness workshops include but are not limited to:

• Industry specific presentations, simulations, demonstrations
• Resume writing
• Mock Interviews
• Panel discussions
